The EcoReef Project PUDDLE-DAM system for rejuvenating
canal waterways.
Canals are waterways that are, by design, usually devoid of plant and animal
life. The EcoReef Project’s system uses small-bore pumping of water from
canals into interconnected waterholes. These ‘dams’ are dug into verges where
plants filter the water and aquatic life flourishes, before this cleaner water re-
enters the waterway. There is very little loss of water because the water pours
back into the waterway. Theoretically, cooling of the entire local environment
due to plant growth, should actually save water in the long term.
The process is slow and modest, but the effects compound over time.
